Portugal and Manchester United winger Nani has been ruled out of the World Cup after failing to recover from a shoulder injury. The former Sporting Lisbon star was examined by Portugal's medical team this morning and the diagnosis was that he wouldn't be fit for the rigours of international football.
The news will come as a big blow to Portugal manager Carlos Queiroz, who has actually been very lucky with injuries coming into the tournament. Even though Nani was behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao Sabrosa in the pecking order for a starting place on the wing, he was expected to deputise for them if an injury (or loss of form) occurred or at the very least be an important player to bring in off the bench. Portugal's number 17 had impressed with a string of eye-catching performances towards the end of the Premier League season and scored a super goal in Portugal's last friendly, a 3-1 win over Cameroon.
The news hasn't affected Portugal's odds for the World Cup and they remain [1.65] chances to qualify from Group G and [32.0] top win the World Cup. Nani will be replaced in the squad by versatile Benfica starlet Ruben Amorim who can play in midfield or at right-back.
