Canada dominated but USA goal tender Ryan Miller saved 42 out of 45 shots
Canada goes hockey crazy as the hosts come face to face with their neighbours on the ice. Meanwhile, things are looking good in the figure skating, says Vince Shuley.
"After last night's 3-5 loss to the US, Canada will face a qualification match against Germany and if successful, Russia in the quarter-finals."
What a game. The face-off between Team Canada and Team USA could not have been filled with more drama and emotion. At 4:40pm today there was a rush all over Canada to get to the closest TV. This was an important hockey game for Team Canada and the road ahead is now a more challenging one. With tonight's 3-5 loss to the US, Canada will face a qualification match against Germany and if successful, Russia in the quarter-finals.
The man of the hour for the US was the modest yet confident goaltender Ryan Miller. Throughout the three periods he saved 42 out of 45 shots on goal in a Canadian dominated game. Taunts from the home crowd at Canada Hockey Place could not faze him, nor could the endless waves of shots on goal from the Canadians. It became a battle of the goaltenders and Stanley Cup and Olympic veteran and goaltender Martin Brodeur could not match Miller's seamless performance.
Up in Whistler, it was another German tour de force at the Sliding Centre with both gold and silver in the Men's two man bobsleigh. In the Super Combined Slalom Bode Miller showed his colors as one of the best all round ski-racers in the world and finally received the Olympic recognition he deserves.
Best Bet: Figure Skating Ice Dance Gold - Virtue and Moir (CAN) [1.21]
While Canada's hockey performance left fans disappointed, on the figure skating front there was an exemplary performance by Virtue and Moir on Sunday. With personal bests in the Original Dance portion just 0.26 points below the world record, they are in the top rank going into the final Free Dance event tomorrow.
