Apolo Ohno can become an Olympian deity with a seventh medal today.
Everything bodes well for a winner tomorrow. In the meantime Tobias Gourlay recalls the golden age of British short track.
Bet of the Day: Back Apolo Ohno at [2.0] to be Top 3 in Men’s 1,000m Short Track
The men's super-G yesterday was won by Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway. 'Norway' is indeed what this column's follower(s) on Tyneside will be saying right now. But everything's falling into place for Bode Miller to win the super-combined on Sunday. First, he won bronze in the downhill. Next, he won silver in the super-G. Ergo tomorrow...
In the meantime his compatriot Lindsey Vonn goes in the women's super-G. So far we've laid her when she's won and backed her when she's lost. She's an even-money favourite for today's event and, so long as her shins are better for their day off yesterday, her two dominant downhill performances make it hard to oppose her in an event that demands similar skills.
But enough with the skiing already. There are a couple of short-track finals worth waiting up until 0351 GMT for. If short track had been more than a demonstration event at Calgary '88, we wouldn't be referencing Robin Cousins as Great Britain's last individual gold medallist before Amy Williams. Much better, we'd be talking about Wilf O'Reilly, who won two of them 22 years ago.
Tonight, there's the women's 1,500m and the men's 1,000m. In the latter, Apolo Ohno goes for a US-record seventh Winter Olympics medal against fierce South Korean opposition. He knows how to rile them though and you can say 'Oh, yes!' to Ohno for a medal at [2.0]. As the man himself said on Twitter yesterday, 'Tomorrow is going to b caaraazzzy! Can u dig it?'
