Downhill champion Lindsey Vonn is all smiles. She doesn't know what she did to this column yesterday.
Tobias Gourlay patents the 180 Double McTwist and decides to back Lindsey Vonn from now on.
Bet of the Day: Back Lindsey Vonn at [3.25] to be Gold Medal Winner in Women’s Super Combined
Vancouver reaches the end of its first week today. We're only up to day six here because no one was paying for a column on the opening ceremony. With just a dash of imagination someone might at least have started a spread on incinerated-dove numbers (third picture down here). As it is, we've had four confirmed losers with one outstanding (both senses) bet on Bode Miller to play out.
At Whistler Creekside yesterday, Lindsey Vonn lost for us, but won gold for herself in the women's downhill. Encouraged by the earlier good performance of Julia Mancuso, an inferior team-mate, and not discouraged by so many others finishing Creekside up in the safety netting, she was far ahead of her main rivals, Germany's Maria Riesch and Sweden's Anja Paerson. The latter was a heavy faller, but is still high up in the betting for today's super combined, which is scheduled to begin at 1730 GMT, and involves a downhill run and a slalom run. Riesch is very similarly priced to Vonn. If Vonn takes as much out of them again on the downhill today, concerns about her relative weakness in the slalom and what it might do to her shin will melt away.
