Regards last night's placepot at Wolverhampton, the theory was right, but the practical element let us down. This evening's low-grade card there looks little more appetising from a placepot perspective, and the truth is you're as well off saving funds for a right cut at Lingfield's competitive action tomorrow, but, to keep us ticking over, here's a suggested perm done more in hope than expectation:
"She hasn’t gone on as expected this year but if Val C is ever going to win a race then this is it"
5.50 - The withdrawal of Sir Geoffrey puts a different spin on this sprint, as it's unlikely to be so strongly run now, to the possible detriment of market leaders Handsome Cross, Anne of Kiev and Steel City Boy. The one who will benefit is Stolt, increasing his chances of dominating, and his latest third at Lingfield (when no chance of getting to the front up against Glamorous Spirit) was a step back in the right direction. Though held up on his last two starts (placed on both), Master Lightfoot is just as comfortable ridden up with the pace, and he too could have a tactical advantage.
6.20 - She hasn't gone on as expected this year but if Val C is ever going to win a race then this is it. The blinkers did something for her at Kempton last time, where she went clear early in the straight, and dropping back from six to five furlongs looks the right move, plus she's ideally drawn to the inside.
6.50 - This is tricky to say the least. Dancing Welcome is Timeform's top-rated, with good reason from a handicapping point of view, but she blows hot and cold and, as such, is overlooked for the placepot in favour of Spinning Ridge, who has been knocking on the door and crying out for a return to this trip, and the unexposed Quiet Mountain.
7.20 - Star Choice is the only choice having looked a reformed character in blinkers with back-to-back wins at Lingfield, barely coming off the bridle for the latest. He's earned his weights rise more than Sinbad The Sailor who has been winning weaker races.
7.50 - He may be an infrequent winner but Join Up is so consistent that he's a must, and alongside him goes The Graig now back facing the same circumstances under which he was runner-up in January.
8.20 - Wetherby Place's will to win is in question but her ability isn't, a cut above this grade if she consented to put it all in, and she'll surely finish second or third at worst, with Stephen Craine just the right sort of jockey to get the most out of her.
