If there were prizes for getting through five legs of the placepot we would be millionaires by now. Alright, that's a slight exaggeration, but a last-leg departure over the jumps at Plumpton on Monday, from a pot that paid £587.70 to a £1 stake (we know it would have been less if our banker Elegant Olive was in), shows the potential rewards we are playing for (we only used sixteen lines), and it is now the turn of 'Team all-weather', who are at Lingfield on Tuesday, to make the latest bid to secure a big payout from the placepot pool.
"Tamino makes the roster for our placepot selections nearly every time he runs and this one is no different."
2.10 - Having put a line through quite a few in the opening maiden, we are left with a couple of big decisions. It was a toss-up between Mawaddah and Tislimeen for the first selection, and we landed on the side of Mick Channon's filly because she'd had fewer chances and shaped with plenty of promise when fifth on her debut last year (ran in listed race next time). Of the rest, we were torn between the Johnston newcomer Magic Omen and the once-raced Clive Brittain-trained filly Asterrlini. The bold print tells you which one we went for.
2.40 - The second maiden is much simpler. Pippbrook Ministar has the best form and should win, so we are happy to bank on her.
3.10 - Nom de la Rosa sets the standard in the seller, but that's on her debut form and she didn't exactly go on last year, eventually sold for just 5,000gns. She's sure to be a banker on many a placepot ticket, but we'll be looking to get her out and have turned to Fair Nella and Magic Spirit, both of whom are fairly solid for all they are yet to register a win between them.
3.40 - Just six runners in the sprint handicap but a difficult race for placepot purposes. Beat The Bell is the pick of the weights on the Timeform card, but the stable form is a concern and he's rated on a standout effort. Peak District is left out on the grounds he's better over shorter, but we are still going to need three. Secret Witness and Halsion Chancer have both been in good form lately, while the long-absent Lucky Redback is potentially thrown in and can't be left out.
4.10 - A maiden handicap in all but name, and one we have no strong opinions on. Fusaichi Flyer is one of the least exposed stepping up in trip and has an obvious chance of winning, so he has to go in, but then we are looking for a more solid 'placepot' horse. Captain Cool fits that particular bill having made the frame on every one of his starts this winter.
4.40 - Tamino makes the roster for our placepot selections nearly every time he runs and this one is no different. Placed on his last three starts, it's hard to see Tamino not being thereabouts again. However, all good things have to come to an end and, in case today is the day, we'll stick Top Flight Splash in as well, largely because of David Evans' record with horses he acquires from other stables (she shaped well when third on her debut for him last time).
