Kempton is the venue for our Placepot tilt on Tuesday
It's supposed to be blondes who have more fun, but on the form of the last week Timeform's jumps squad have their work cut out to ensure all-weather followers aren't added to that idiom. The fields for Kempton's Tuesday card come in more manageable portions than the banquet that was Cheltenham, so here's hoping we can get the jumpers back paying their way.
"Although Alfie Sherrin couldn’t justify our bullish confidence in the strength of a valuable handicap at Newbury last month in Thursday’s Pertemps Final, Woolfall Treasure gives us another bite at that particular cherry"
2.00 - Eight line up for the opener, much to the delight of Placepotters everywhere, and although the cautious will guarantee passage with both of the penalised pair Captain Chris and Rollwiththepunches, the intrepid, which of course includes Timeform's swashbuckling Placepot team, will bank on Philip Hobbs' charge, who looked a really bright prospect when winning over course and distance last time.
2.30 - Although novice handicap chases can often be the stuff of woe for Placepot hunters, a lack of in-form and straightforward types makes this a more appealing proposition than most, even allowing for the precarious field size of seven. Reland is a sure thing for our perm, his 3-lb rise for what was an encouraging chasing debut at Ludlow underplaying him for our money, while his yard are quite obviously in fine form at present. Although courageous, we're not foolhardy, and in a race of this nature we'll strengthen our claims with the in-form Tooka, whose best efforts have come at more galloping tracks but he can prove himself to be no plodder now going the right way.
3.05 - Try as we might, there seems no way of getting Great Reason out of the three. Jumping is clearly no problem for Nicky Henderson's hurdler, while the trip will suit him if anything, and he looks well up to defying a penalty let alone placing.
3.40 - Although Alfie Sherrin couldn't justify our bullish confidence in the strength of a valuable handicap at Newbury last month in Thursday's Pertemps Final, Woolfall Treasure gives us another bite at that particular cherry. Gary Moore's gelding was returning from a long lay-off when finishing third behind Alfie Sherrin and Triggerman at the Berkshire track, shaping as though the step up from two miles suited him well; although back in trip today, he's well treated and should be hitting the frame as long as his belated reappearance hasn't left a mark. A couple of other favourably-treated sorts should ensure we get through another leg: Galaxy Rock has been on an upward curve away from soft ground this campaign, while Dover's Hill brings plenty of good course form to the table.
4.15 - Four runners. Those who tiptoed through the early legs are now staring down the barrel of a perm that even Kevin Keegan couldn't justify, though with plenty of lines still to play with we can afford to admit to our uncertainty. Only really Jigsaw Dancer can be ruled out, so the other three all earn their place.
4.50 - Synthe Davis is a beacon of hope in the choppy seas of novice handicaps, being allowed to run off the same mark as when an arguably-unlucky third at Leicester in December. The choice for the second berth seems to lie between Minnie Hill and Exulto. Handicap plots aren't really the stuff of which Placepot dividends are made, so it's the former who gets out vote, the speed test likely to prove ideal for one so headstrong, acknowledging her underlying kinks.
