The lingfieldpark.co.uk maiden stakes run over a mile on Monday looked to contain some horses with the potential to go on to better things. The modest pace does cast some doubt over the form, but, given the promising profile of the winner and the second, it is worth taking a positive view.

"There were signs that Merrqaad was still not fully clued up as he carried his head awkwardly and flashed his tail when pressured but, at this stage of his development, he’s worth the benefit of the doubt over his temperament."

Merrqaad duly confirmed the promise he had shown on his debut at Kempton. He shaped well that day, finishing third after showing greenness under pressure. There were signs that Merrqaad was still not fully clued up as he carried his head awkwardly and flashed his tail when pressured but, at this stage of his development, he's worth the benefit of the doubt over his temperament. The penny did drop in the end, and he knuckled down to get there on the nod; Merrqaad looks capable of winning more races.

Al Farahidi made a very encouraging start to his racing career, seemingly paying for his early enthusiasm when collard by the winner late on. This was an especially taking performance as most newcomers from the stable have tended to need the run. He looked the likeliest winner for most of the final furlong, but hung slightly left and was perhaps just beaten for fitness in the final yards. Al Farahidi is sure to improve and win a similar event.

Another making his debut, Danehill Sunset, also showed some promise. He seemed in need of the experience, as he started slowly but soon pulled his way to the front, travelling comfortably for a long way, before tiring. He may appreciate a slightly greater test of stamina in time, but he didn't look short of speed and will certainly achieve more next time.

Head Hunted didn't go on from his debut at Nottingham where he finished fourth behind a promising horse in the shape of Burj Nahar. However, he should also relish a longer trip and does retain some long-term potential.

Jawal had shown promise on his debut at Wolverhampton in February, finishing third despite inexperience. He was sent off favourite, but he shaped as if something was amiss, racing wide into the straight before fading. His debut promise should not be forgotten.
