Hey Big Spender, the first of two winners for the Jury at Cheltenham on Saturday
Timeform's Simon Walker looks back on how the Jury service fared in January
"With that in mind, we feel our subscribers appreciate the equanimity shown by members of the Jury."
Throughout the Twentieth Century, few people can have delivered as many quotable lines as Muhammad Ali.
'If you even dream you can beat me you'd better wake up and apologise', is one of my personal favourites, but almost as good is, 'it's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am'.
After four consecutive winning months with profit on turnover greater than 30% one member of the Jury team thought he'd deliver such a line after Arctic Magic battled back to wrest the initiative from Aather on the run-in at Cheltenham. How quickly this particular member of the team had put the performances of Handsome Cross, Good Old Thyme and R Woody to the back of his mind!
It's certainly true to say that, for much of January, the Jury team had serious concerns as to whether we'd even finish the month in front, and such as the ride on Handsome Cross make you feel that the punting gods are seriously cheesed off with everyone concerned with the Jury. However, arguably the most important quality (apart from the obvious one of finding winners) is the ability to forget about the previous day and approach the new one with a clean slate/blank sheet of paper/clear mind. It's a state of mind that the best gamblers are blessed with and, however frustrated the Jury team might have been twenty-four hours earlier, we always attempt to treat the next day as though the previous one had never occurred.
With that in mind, we feel our subscribers appreciate the equanimity shown by members of the Jury. Whether in a lengthy losing sequence or a relatively successful one, the aim is never to bemoan our luck or, conversely, convey feelings of smugness when both selections on a Saturday have gone in! Hopefully, that way complacency has a greater chance of being kept at bay and it's easier to focus on the next target which, as ever, is finishing the following month in profit. Here's to February.
