Federer turned on the style to send German fifth seed Tommy Haas tumbling out of the tournament in a 6-4 7-5 victory and remain on course to regain the trophy he lost to Rafael Nadal last year.

World number one Federer will play unseeded Mikhail Youzhny in Saturday's final after the Russian defeated Robin Soderling 7-5 6-2.

"It was extremely physical out there, a lot of tough points. It was tough to get the break, and he didn't face a break point all last week so he was definitely on a roll," said Federer.

"I knew it was going to be tough, a lot of running, patience as well, and hopefully from my end also serve well and try to stay in the match.

"I thought that was an excellent performance. I rate it very high."

Federer is the favourite to win in Dubai at 1.11, while Mikhail Youzhny is trading at 8.8 to cause a major upset.
