is through to the Dubai Open quarter-finals after a three-set win over Russia's Igor Andreev.
The 20-year-old Spaniard stayed on course for the title, but only by the narrowest of margins, coming through to win 6-2 3-6 7-6 (7-2).
"Igor is a very tough opponent," said Nadal, who also needed three sets to beat Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus in the opening round.
"I lost to him two years ago on clay in Valencia, so I knew I needed to play a very good match to beat him.
"Winning the third set in a tie-break was very important for my confidence. I have had two good tough matches now after the month-long break."
Nadal is now the 1.64 favourite to defeat Mikhail Youzhny (2.52) in the last eight and is trading at 7.8 to go on and win the title, with Roger Federer the 1.37 favourite.
