Australian Open champion Serena Williams has pulled out of next week's Bangalore International because of flu.
The American was set to make her first visit to India and first appearance since winning her eighth grand slam last month, but tournament organiser Sunder Rajan told BBC Sport: "Serena failed to board the flight to Bangalore because of a bad 'flu.
"We came to know that she did not take the flight only this morning. It is very disappointing. We were all looking forward to her first visit to India."
Italian Mara Santangelo, who Williams beat in the first round en route to victory in Melbourne, won last year's Bangalore International and Betfair punters will be monitoring her closely when the market opens.
Santangelo, one of only eight seeded players in last year's event, beat Jelena Kostanic in the final and is certain to be a protagonist when this year's tournament kicks off on February 12.
