Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrova eased into the third round of the Pacific Life Open on a good day for Russian women.
Second-seeded Kuznetsova beat Italy's Romina Oprandi 7-5 6-3 after fourth seed Petrova had earlier eliminated Argentina's Gisela Dulko 6-3 6-4 in Indian Wells.
Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open champion, won in just under an hour and a half and next meets compatriot and tour veteran Elena Likhovtseva.
Likhovtseva upset countrywoman Olga Poutchkova, the 26th seed, 7-6 6-2.
World number one Maria Sharapova, who is playing in the opposite half of the draw to her compatriots, remains the favourite to clinch the Pacific Life Open crown.
The former Wimbledon champion is available to back at 3 following a rusty showing on her return to action in Friday's second round.
Petrova and Kuznetsova are both 8.6 to emerge from the bottom half of the draw and win the Indian Wells title.
