Lleyton Hewitt has withdrawn from the World Indoor Tournament in Rotterdam as he has still to recover from a damaged hamstring.

The former world number one picked up the injury when losing to Gilles Simon in the second round of the Marseille Open last week but had hoped to be fit enough to play in Holland.

The Australian star was due to meet Gael Monfils of France in his opening encounter but was frustrated to announce that he would not be in the field.

"I can't take part. I'm extremely disappointed, both for myself and the tournament," he said.

"I've been having three treatments a day but haven't yet been on court. It's improving, but slowly."

The 2002 Wimbledon champion now faces a race against time to be fit for the season's opening Masters Series event in Indian Wells, which begins on March 5.

Nikolay Davydenko is favourite at 4.3 in Rotterdam, with Novak Djokovic on offer at 4.7 and Ivan Ljubicic trading at 6.4.

Tommy Robredo is available to back at 8, while Radek Stepanek trades at 25 and Monfils is offered at 30.

The Dutch event has been hit by a number of high-profile withdrawals as Tim Henman, Mario Ancic and Marcos Baghdatis had already pulled out of the tournament before Hewitt's decision to rest his injured leg.
