Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis are through to the Pan Pacific Open semi-finals after differing displays in the last eight.
Top seed Sharapova lost the first set to Japanese player Ai Sugiyama, but eventually ran out a 4-6 6-0 6-1 victor.
The Australian Open runner-up insisted: "It's never easy against Sugiyama.
"She had the crowd behind her and was able to take the first set, but I'm glad I was able to come back and win."
Sharapova added: "There are going to be days when your serve isn't working and when that happens you just have to concentrate on the things that are going well."
Meanwhile, Hingis was more impressive as she cruised past Australia's Samantha Stosur 6-0 6-1 to reach the last four.
Despite her struggles, Betfair punters still feel Sharapova is the player to beat and have the Russian as the 1.79 favourite to lift the title. Hingis, who is seeking a fifth Pan Pacific title, is trading at 2.5.
