Can Nalbandian and Schwank pull Argentina back into the Davis Cup fight?

"David Nalbandian’s creaking body was not risked in the singles, but he does have a fine Davis Cup doubles record of 11 wins and five losses, with a 7-1 mark on clay."

Old-stager Nalbandian hasn't been risked in the singles but will the ploy work out with a win in today's doubles? Sean Calvert says yes!

Juan Martin Del Potro couldn't have given much more yesterday and traded at [1.17] tro win from his opening quote of [2.7] so it was a great trade in the opening day of the Davis Cup Final.

I predicted a long match but unfortunately after well over four hours, the big man ran out of gas against David Ferrer and Argentina are really up against it now at around [26.0] to win the Cup.

Saturday's doubles was always going to be vital for the chances of the Argentina side and they've got a great chance of getting a point on the board with the pair they've chosen.

David Nalbandian's creaking body was not risked in the singles, but he does have a fine Davis Cup doubles record of 11 wins and five losses, with a 7-1 mark on clay.

His 22-5 career Davis Cup record in singles and 10-1 on the red dirt might have tempted Tito Vazquez to select Nalbandian for the singles, but surely three matches on clay in three days would have been too much and consequently, he can put all his effort into the dubs.

He partners Eduardo Schwank, who has had some excellent results in doubles this year, including reaching the French Open final with Juan-Sebastian Cabal after beating the Bryan brothers in the semis.

That is some superb form and Schwank and since the US Open, he has gone on to reach another four finals - admittedly at Challenger level - and he won his last doubles tournament a few weeks ago in Buenos Aires, with Carlos Berlocq.

He's started his Davis Cup doubles career well too, with a 3-1 record and 2-0 on clay, with the only loss coming to the Slam winning pair of Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement on a hard-court.

It could be argued that Schwank isn't that familiar with playing with Nalbandian, as they've not played a match together since the 2008 Swiss Indoors in Basel when they reached the semi-finals, but presumably they've been getting reacquainted in the last few weeks.

The Spanish pair are far more familiar with each others' work, having played regularly together, but they have lost 10 out of their last 11 matches as a doubles pair and you have to go back to 2009 for either of them's last win in doubles on clay.

In Davis Cup doubles, Feliciano Lopez has won eight and lost eight, while Fernando Verdasco has a slightly better 8-6 record, but all those recent losses suggests that they are vulnerable to anything like a half decent partnership.

Recommended Bet
Back Nalbandian/Schwank to beat Verdasco/Lopez at around [2.4]
