Mitt enjoys his Florida win and is a heavy favourite for the Republican nomination
"Romney proved he can take a punch in Florida, as his opponents threw everything but the kitchen sink at him in a bitter contest. Romney was attacked for his tax affairs, corporate career and alleged liberal tendencies by Gingrich and a host of Tea Party favourites."
Republican Nomination is Romney's to lose as the market favourite bounces back from South Carolina with massive Florida victory
Mitt Romney took a huge step towards the Republican nomination last night with a comprehensive victory in the Florida Primary.
Victory in the Sunshine State earned Romney 50 delegates, opening up a significant lead in that race and more importantly regaining all-important momentum. Following defeat in the previous South Carolina contest, Romney ceded Florida favouritism to Newt Gingrich and drifted out to [1.7] for the overall nomination. This morning, he is back in to just [1.14] to face Barack Obama in November and [2.54] for the Presidency.
Furthermore, Romney proved he can take a punch, as his opponents threw everything but the kitchen sink at him in a bitter contest. Romney was attacked for his tax affairs, corporate career and alleged liberal tendencies by Gingrich and a host of Tea Party favourites. Following failed candidate Rick Perry's endorsement, Gingrich also gained the backing of Herman Cain and Sarah Palin, but it wasn't nearly enough to counter Romney's massive financial advantage and wall-to-wall attack ads. Whether these attacks from the right persist or damage Romney's Presidential bid remains to be seen.
Whatever the case, this contest is far from finished. Gingrich says he is determined to take this fight all the way to the convention, and his supporters remain confident he'll fare better elsewhere. Next up is Saturday's Nevada Caucus, followed by a trio of contests next Tuesday in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota.
