Romney campaigning in Iowa
"At [1.31], Romney is clear favourite to land the nomination to take on Barack Obama. However, according to the markets, the contest is closer in today's primary, with Ron Paul trading at [3.1]."
In America 2012 is an election year so that means campaigning, voting and counting right from the get go. Today, all eyes are on Iowa where the first Republican caucus is taking place...
With only 11 months to go until the Presidential election, the year in US Politics gets off to a flyer in Iowa today. With voters set to go to the ballots, Mitt Romney remains [1.88] favourite to win the first primary in the race to become the Republican party's candidate.
At [1.31], the Massachusetts senator is the clear favourite to land the nomination to take on Barack Obama. However, according to the markets, the contest is closer in today's primary, with Ron Paul trading at [3.1] and Rick Sanotorum making a late charge at [4.3].
Newt Gingrich, who was recently favourite to win the nomination, now finds himself trading at [50.0] in Iowa. The wheels have really fallen off the ex-Speaker of the House's campaign and he displayed his desperation when he labelled Romney a 'liar' earlier today.
Meanwhile, Betfair punters don't fancy either Rick Perry or motor-mouthed Michelle Bachmann's chances in the Hawkeye State as they both trade at [180.00].
Things haven't been entirely rosy in the Heartland for Romney as he was forced abandon his final rally in Des Moines today. He was heckled by campaigners from the Occupy group who accused him of being too close to Wall Street and of ignoring the plight of America's poor.
