A smattering of the contestants taking part in this year's Miss World

"Miss World isn't judged purely on cup size and aesthetics. Rather, the political manifestos of the finalists concerning their plans for world peace etc, are also considered and evaluated by the judges. It's a bit like the upcoming British General Election, albeit with fewer tits."

Eliot Pollak trains his eye on the many, many beauties battling it out (in friendly fashion of course, no nails or hair-pulling) for the crown of Miss World and, incredibly, there's not a lay joke in sight

Those lucky South Africans. Not only do they stage the Jules Rimet this year, the land of Mandela also host the really big one. On December 12 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, it's Miss World 2009. Or Callum Best's to-do list, as it's more commonly known....

Whilst Castor Semanya has sadly not been invited to represent her home nation, a full array of global beauties will be vying for the attention of some particularly pervy judges. And if lovely ladies strolling about in next-to-nothing isn't your thing, well Miss World is also a cracking betting opportunity, being a truly wide-open field with 112 potential winners.

For the feminists still reading this piece, it would be remiss not to point out, that Miss World isn't judged purely on cup size and aesthetics. Rather, the political manifestos of the finalists concerning their plans for world peace etc, are also considered and evaluated by the judges. It's a bit like the upcoming British General Election, albeit with fewer tits.

Let's start with the home-grown talent. Miss England proved her mettle as representative of the British female, by being disqualified for violently assaulting Miss Manchester in a nightclub toilet. Her replacement, Katrina Hodge (a member of the British Armed Forces) is hence unlikely to win, in what would be the Miss World equivalent of Denmark hurrying off the beach, and strolling away with Euro 92.

Seventeen-year-old Miss Northern Ireland, Cherie Gardiner, gained 4 As in her A Levels (Chemistry, Maths, Physics and Design.) Good luck to her but it's something of a pity that she'll have to wait a good 20 years before any male is remotely interested in her intellectual capacity.

Miss Scotland, however, could be in with a shout. In the first contest - Miss Beach Beauty - held on the November 25, Katharine Brown's swimwear earned her a creditable third. In the last three Miss Worlds, the eventual winners have posted top three finishes in Miss Beach Beauty. Hence Miss Panama and Miss Gibraltar should also be amongst the front-runners.

Yet of even more interest to punters is the Miss Top Model contest. In the two years it has been staged, the eventual winner went on to win the Miss World crown. The competition takes place this Saturday (Nov 28) and is certainly worth keeping an eye on before having a punt.

The slightly longer-term form may also be significant. Tatum Keshwar (South Africa) and Chloe Mortaud (France) were both top ten finishers in the other big pageant of the season - Miss Universe 2009.

So a top night of entertainment beckons. For the viewer, a chance to ogle the globe's finest crumpet. For the judges, a chance to look seedy on telly. For the winner, fame and fortune, and a journey that will have taken them from beauty pageants at college to the arms of Calum Best.
