"It's not so much Wigan's recent solid form that makes me think they can cover the handicap here but the way they performed when beating Saints at Knowsley Road back in the spring."
Living it up among the toffs at Ascot is all well and good, but Graham Cunningham is pining for a return to the north this weekend and feels Wigan have to tools to take St Helens down in the game of the weekend at the DW Stadium on Sunday.
This week's Blog is being penned in a distinctly humid Ascot media centre as the Ladies' Day crowd at Royal Ascot begins to make its weary way home through the evening sunshine.
As I look around there are blokes from America, Dubai, France and Australia busily penning their words of wisdom about how Rite Of Passage got the better of a stirring duel with Age Of Aquarius in the Gold Cup.
On balance, I doubt that many of them would swap their smoked salmon lunches on the royal heath for a pie and a pint at the DW Stadium this weekend.
But I can't wait to head north for the biggest Derby in Super League this Sunday and Wigan look a fair shout to concede four points to their arch rivals.
It's not so much Wigan's recent solid form that makes me think they can cover the handicap here but the way they performed when beating Saints at Knowsley Road back in the spring.
The Cherry and Whites nullified the Saints attack for much of that game, only looking in danger of conceding when down to 12 men due to a sin binning, and a similar effort this time around could go a fair way to securing a top two finish for the regular season.
The other two games that catch the eye as potential punting mediums this weekend feature Catalans at home to Wakefield on Saturday at 17:30 and Huddersfield at home to Hull on Sunday at 3.00.
In short, I fancy Catalans and Huddersfield to cover a four point start with the help of home advantage.
The Dragons put up a commendable effort against Castleford last week considering most of their team had been part of the France team drubbed by England a day earlier.
Their chances of beating a Wakey outfit lacking in pace will increase if the weather turns hot, while Huddersfield look right back on track after a mid-season blip and they look the value against Hull even though the black and whites will be high on confidence after a several convincing victories since Sean Long returned from injury.
