The last remaining 27 players sat down to play all the way down to the final 9 before taking the break for the final table. Here are some of the biggest hands of the day, including unknown players who might be the next world champion.
Brandon Cantu, one of the most experienced players left in the tournament was eliminated when a player raised and he moved all in, getting called. Cantu showed down 9h 9d and was slightly ahead of his opponents Ad Qs. The flop was not a great one for Cantu, 8d 6d 3d giving his opponent the nut flush draw along with his overcards. The turn 8h was a help but the 4d finished Cantu off, sending him to the rail in 20th place, earning $257,334 for his 7 day effort.
Tiffany Michelle's controversial run finished when she called a preflop raise with another player. She then check raised all in on a flop of Ad 10h 9c and got one call and was almost drawing dead when her opponent showed As Ah against her Ac Jd. Her only backdoor chance was her 3-straight, but the 5h on the turn meant she had no chance of winning. For her 17th place finish she earned $334,535 and became the 4th highest finishing female in the history of the WSOP main event.
Dennis Philips and Scott Montgomery, two of the largest stacks for the day, got involved in a monstrous pot when Phillips raised and Montgomery re raised with Phillips calling. The flop came Js 10s 6s and Phillips check called a bet from Montgomery. The turn bought the Kh and Phillips again check called a bet. The river was the 9h and Phillips once again checked with Montgomery instantly moving all in. Phillips took his time but eventually called and saw the bad news when Montgomery tabled As 10h. Montgomery raked in the pot of over 15m.
