The remaining 2,379 players from Days 1C and 1D returned to the Rio to play the second day 2 of the main event. Here are the biggest hands from the day.
Defending champion Jerry Yang made an early exit. He was severely short stacked and had to make lots of moves. He first moved in with A2 only to get called by AQ, but survived when the board bought two pair. He finally moved in with AJ and was in great shape against A9, but sadly a river 9 meant Yang lost his chance to repeat his victory. He wished his table good luck and received a round of applause as he left the Amazon room.
Matt 'Hoss_TBF' Hawrilenko was eliminated when he re-raised pre flop with a short stack. His opponent moved all in and Hawrilenko quickly called, showing As Kd and being in great shape against his opponents Ac Qh. A flop of 10s 7s 4s almost sealed the deal for Matt as his opponent was down to two outs. The 4c came on the turn giving his opponent a chance to now split the pot, but a river Qd meant he scooped it instead and sent 'The Big Fish' to the rail.
If anyone was going to catch the medias attention today it could only be Phil Hellmuth. He had already played a few impressive hands before this one came up. Phil limped, declaring 'Come on boys, Lets play a pot' before the button counted out chips for a raise. Phil told him he would call, but the button still raised, and Phil kept his promise and called. The flop came 9s 7h 4s and Phil checked, telling his opponent he would call on the flop but could be bluffed on the turn. True to his word he called his opponents bet and then checked in the dark plus another invitation to bluff him. The turn bought the 5s and both players checked, before a river 2h fell and Phil fired a small bet. He told his opponent that he could raise anything for value and win, but his opponent could not follow through and folded. Phil showed 3s 3h, to which he said 'I had him beat, fair and square' to which his opponent agreed.
Only 855 players made it to the end of the day 2B. A total of 1,324 made it through the combined day 2's and will reconvene later today for day 3. Here are the chip leaders at the end of day 2B:
