Craig Marquis' amazing run at the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event is over after Scott Montgomery hit his four-outer to eliminate the young Texan in ninth place.
After the action folded to him in middle position, Marquis open-shoved for 4,925,000. After a few moments of deliberation, Scott Montgomery made the call, drawing a gasp from the crowd and causing the short-stack, Kelly Kim, to stand up from his seat.
Marquis revealed he had put his tournament life on the line with 7d 7h and had a slight preflop advantage over Montgomery's Ad Qh. The dealer spreads the flop of Ts Ah 7c, giving Montgomery top pair but Marquis had flopped bottom set and was now a 96% favourite!
The Jack of diamonds on the turn gave Montgomery four outs as he would need to hit a king on the river to complete his straight, any other card and Marquis would double up. Lady Luck was obviously shining on the Canadian as the King of spades fell on the river to end Marquis' dream of becoming the youngest-ever Main Event Champion.
Craig Marquis' ninth place finish earns him $900,670 and he will be the only player not to receive any extra prize money today.
