Popular cash game genius Tom 'durrrr' Dwan is no longer in the running to be inducted into the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame after the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council stated "he does not currently meet the criteria."

Under Poker Hall of Fame rules, any player who is to inducted has to have played for high-stakes, played against acknowledged top competition, played consistently well and gained the respect of their peers and have stood the test of time. It is this last criteria that Dwan has failed to meet, due to his relatively short career.

Non-professionals can also be inducted if they are deemed to have contributed to the overall growth and success of the game of poker, with indelible positive and lasting results, as was the case with "Hole-card camera" inventor Henry Orenstein who was inducted in 2008.

The Poker Hall of Fame has been in place since Benny Binion set it up in 1979 to preserve the names and legacies of the world's greatest poker players. Since its conception it has inducted 37 people though there is no longer a physical hall, players are now just noted in a book.

With Dwan's omission from the nominations, there are now nine players in with a chance of being immortalised in the Poker Hall of Fame. In no particular order, the nine nominees are; Tom McEvoy, Mike Sexton, Eric Seidel, Dan Harrington, Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, Men Nguyen, Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu.

Over the next couple of months the 15 living Poker Hall of Fame members will each cast their vote, along with a limited number of media ballots and any player receiving 75% of the votes will be inducted on November 7 after a special ceremony.

If I were to put money on which player will be inducted this year, then I would have to go with Barry Greenstein but I think Daniel Negreanu could have an outside chance too. Tom Dwan will just have to wait a few more years to cement his place alongside poker's elite.
