Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace mean it is very easy to keep up with the whereabouts of your favourite poker players from the comfort of your computer chair.
Even the Betfair pros have their own Facebook and Twitter accounts that they update regularly, much to the delight of the hundreds and thousands of 'friend' and followers.
However, identity checks for these sites are extremely basic, meaning it is relatively simple to create an account in someone else's name and impersonate them. One poker superstar who recently found this out at his peril was Patrik Antonius.
Patrik, who in the past has admitted to being a bit of a technophobe, said in a recent interview that he had "never heard of Twitter until this summer"and he would have still been oblivious to its existence hadn't Doyle Brunson angrily confronted him about some 'Tweets' he thought his fellow high-stakes pro had made.
'Texas Dolly' was less than impressed about the way Mr Antonius was gloating about a victory in Bobby's Room and decided to air his views to the popular Finnish former model. It quickly became apparent that someone had created an account in Patrick's name and was pretending to be him!
When asked about the bogus Twitter account, Patrik stated, "I don't have a Twitter account and I have never posted a single word there. I have no interest in posting updates about my comings or goings. I'm a private person and I want to keep my private life to myself. I would never want to post entries telling everybody where I am and what I'm doing right now."
It is not only Twitter that has been targeted by over zealous Antonius fans, as there are over a dozen Facebook pages pretending to be him. Patrik admits to owning one of these pages but only uses it to keep in touch with a select few people.
They say impersonation is the greatest form of flattery but try telling that to Patrik Antonius and see if he agrees with you.
