The State Of Gambling In Finland

RSS / Editor / 25 January 2008 / Leave a comment

FINLAND is rarely in the news. One imagines it is rarely in the news even in Finland. But to that country we journey, and learn of that nation's plans for online gambling.

One Finnish minister is looking to create a national online poker site.

Just last week, Finland's Ministry of Social Affairs and Health said it was planning to introduce an amendment to the law on gambling that could give Internet gamblers the ability to claim back their losses.

You can see the problem. What business would run a gambling operation in that land?

Now the Minister of Culture and Sports, Stefan Wallin, is championing national online poker for Finland.

Profits would be used to benefit the country.

According to the YLE, officials at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health have taken a negative view of Wallin's idea.

Wallin point to Sweden and that country's success with its state-run gambling site, Svenska Spel.
