After part one ran on for far too long, I have decided to trim this entry down so that it actually contains some poker!
My room-mate for the trip was Snake Eyes and he made a post on the forum about his arrival at the lovely B&B we stayed in, so have a quick read of that, especially the part where he gets the receptionist to believe that we are all breakdancers! LOL!
So after a quick change of clothes, a glorious full English and a pint, we made our way to the casino to meet up with the rest of the team and to get our Raise The River polo shorts. As soon as I got into my team top, I was raring to go as the structure was brilliant to say the least. A 7,500 starting stack with blinds at 45 minute intervals, starting at 25/50. Not too shabby at all and all dealer dealt too.
After a team photo there was a darts style intro where we had to walk in front of everyone else to a theme tune, cleverly designed so 200 people weren't looking for their seat at once! I took my seat at table 15 seat 7, counted my 7.5k chips and thought of a game plan. I was initially going to rock up and fold unless I got decent holdings but then decided that with the size of the starting stack, and the slow structure, I could splash around a little and if I dropped to 4.5k after a couple of levels, I would still have a stack I could cause problems with.
I hate getting a decent hand first hand in, so I was happy to look down and find that I would not have to play my J5o right away. Nobody at my table seemed daunted by the live environment and most were having good banter, especially a guy by the name of Mr Entertainment who was a right laugh. Anyway, the table seemed pretty damn tight and I decided I could chip up if I played aggressively and by using position.
My first real hand was after a few minutes in the small blind with a pair of red fives. Action folds around to a guy from a forum I've never heard of but he's been talking about the last forum game that was held in Blackpool and apparently he did very well so he's not a donkey. This guy raises 3xBB first in from middle positions and it folds to me. Now, there are not a lot of flops that look good for fives so I decide to pump it up and try take it pre-flop and build an image of someone who defends their blinds and can't be pushed around. After two minutes he folds 99 face up and I show my fives.
After the first level I've added about 1k to my stack, nothing great but I've not shown a hand down apart from my 55 hand. The table seems pretty tight and I decide now is the time to make some moves and play aggressively and take advantage. I've now open raised in late position each of the last 7-8 times so when I it folds to me on the button with 98o, I make it 3xBB again! Guy in my SB moans about always being raised when he has a pair and he's tilting due to being outdrawn the last hand. BB folds and flop comes 986r. SB shoves instantly and I call. SB has 55 for a gutshot, which doesn't appear and I have a nice stack now of about 14k that I can throw around.
A young lad got moved into the SB's spot soon after and after seeing me either raise or re-raise five hands in a row, asked if I was mental! I wish they had a hole card camera as I had bugger all but was raising and re-raising and taking down pots. However, when you play an aggressive game, you have to be aware people are going to try and trap you and trap me they did. A big guy opened in early position and with me being over confident now, I made the call with Ts7s. Me and this hand have history so I guess I called based on that! One guy calls then the action folds around and we see a seven high flop with two diamonds. Raiser checks and I decide to lead out, causing the guy to my left to fold but hate it when he announces he's all-in. After a chip count from him, counting what was in the pot, I was getting over 2:1 and calling won't cripple me. I convince myself he is on a flush draw or has something like AQ or AK and call. Obviously he has Queens, which hold and I now have an image of a lunatic! Marvellous, time to get paid off with my hands!
