From the 180 of the 45 man games I have played I have bubbled ten percent of them, which should indicate that I have a problem with bubble play
Anyone who has followed this blog or any blog I have kept in the past will know all too well that I struggle to keep focussed on the task in hand and stick to one particular poker discipline. This is one of the major reasons I have not progressed as much as I would have liked.
However, I made a pact with myself at the end of last month that I would stick to playing some 45 man and 180 man tournaments, build a decent bankroll and then hopefully play in some bigger large-field MTTs looking for a decent score. Whilst I have stuck to this plan, playing 310 games in the past two weeks (100 more since my last update), the RNG is determined to drive me insane!
I now find myself over 315,000 chips under EV over my 310 game sample size and considering the total chips in play in the majority of my games is 65,000 I am running around five outright wins under EV. Five wins would be a nice, tidy profit, instead I am down from my play in the 45 man games and only ever-so slightly up overall.
The 45 man games were going pretty well, despite the lack of running normal, but that all changed last night when I played 50 MTTSNG and dropped a total of 28 buy-ins, for the biggest losses of my limited poker career. Pissed off is not even close to how I felt about it! I hate to sound like a broken record but this little downswing feels like it will go on forever. I seem to be running like death when it matters the most, when the blinds are significant and we are nearing the money.
From the 180 of the 45 man games I have played I have bubbled ten percent of them, which should indicate that I have a problem with bubble play but not according to SNG Wiz, which tells me I am doing 95% of things correctly. I guess it is just the variance of turbo tournament poker but it utterly frustrating to say the least.
I guess this whiny post is just another poker player making the "I'm losing woe is me" post but writing things down really helps me to deal with things. Last night I was ready to say screw it to MTTSNG and play some cash games or another form of poker but just typing this makes me realise that this is just standard poker variance and that if I were playing these for a living, 180 games is probably a single day's play at the most. Maybe I should play more?
It's not just me running bad, my mate James Atkin had a terrible time at the tables last week, where he ran at -48.8% ROI over 188 games. His losses were far more substantial, plus he plays for a living and he ran at over 800,000 chips under EV in his sample. I guess there is always someone worse off than you! Chin up mate!
My plan of action is to keep on grinding the 45 man games as they are most definitely beatable in the long run, hopefully by the end of the week I will have played another couple of hundred games and everything will be moving back to some sort of normality.
As always thanks for reading and best of luck at the tables!
