OVER at the University of South Dakota, Bad, Jennifer, Britney and Kenny are making ready for the university's term-long poker class.

"Poker and the Meaning of Life" is open to all first years. The school's Professor Doug Peterson believes poker is a mirror of life.

That for later. For now know that the text book of choice is Poker Nation, by Andy Bellin. The book's full title goes: Poker Nation: A High-Stakes, Low-Life Adventure into the Heart of a Gambling Country.

"You have to maximize profits through guile and savvy, eke out every last dollar that your competition is willing to lose to you - and, when you don't have the winning cards, flee as fast as possible," writes Bellin.

"The worst hand in poker is the second-best one at the table."

Scholars are best advised not to learn the passages by heart and quote them in public. To do so would be to run the risk of failing the course - in life...
