Last year this turned out ot be one of the most star studded tables of the WSOPE, with Hendon mob regular Joe Beevers, Chris 'Jesus Ferguson' and Jennifer Harman-Traniello all making the final table. In the end it was a surprise player (to most people) who took the £70,875 prize first place and the first ever WSOPE bracelet.
The reason I say that it was surprise to most people, is that over here at Betfair we had been watching Thomas Bihl for quite some time, as he was one of our most successful sit and go players. Having played over 15,000 of our high stakes sit 'n' go's and SIXPAKS, he was a classic exemplar of the new generation of high turnover, large scale experience online players that have started to make their mark on the live scene. Read a great interview with Thomas Bihl here to get more insight into how his game developed at Betfair poker.
In terms of the best strategy for the event, the structure of this years WSOPE is great, with ninety minute levels, and a gentle increase in the blinds to enable the most possible play. A full list of the structure is available here.
This great structure is particularly important, due to the fact that H.O.R.S.E is a limit game. All limit games require focussing on playing solid hand values in position a lot - something which a great structure allows a player to do. Although there are still often situations to bluff in limit games, you cannot play nearly as many hands as you can in no limit and pot limit games - the chance to trap someone for all their chips is just not there in limit like it is in other variants, and as a result play has to be tightened up significantly.
H.O.R.S.E is a great game to learn if your interest is starting to diverse away from just no limit hold'em and Omaha - a mastery of it is considered essential to be respected at the top of the game. Remember that the big game that runs in Vegas is always mixed, and winning a WSOPE H.O.R.S.E event could possibly be a great stepping stone on your way to the top.
Remember that you can freeroll your way into this particular WSOPE tournament, as well as all the others exclusively at Betfair poker - it will also give you a great chance to sharpen up those H.O.R.S.E skills...
