As a result, good no limit hold'em players will usually be masters of human psychology and bravery, able to consistently and accurately put their opponents to the test in the right spots.
It is no coincidence that nearly all poker professionals are specialists in one or two types of game. Most players find a game that they are good at, does not seem to tilt them that much when the going gets rough, and that suits their personality type.
This is simply because poker is a game where each game has it's own personality and style, and finding the one that is right for you can really aid your early poker development.
Perhaps the best example of this is the difference between limit hold'em and no limit hold'em. Limit hold'em is quite a scientific game, focused on playing percentages, extracting maximum value when you're ahead, and losing the minimum when behind. The game requires little bravery or guts, and simply relies on astute knowledge of hold'em odds, your opponent's possible range, and the ability to save and make the odd extra bet.
Compare this to no limit hold'em, which is a game that actually relies very little on odds and saving or winning the odd extra bet. No limit hold'em is primarily a game of bravery and reads, where a player's aggression and guts will win the money, as the ability to make large bets makes your opponents life much harder in terms of calling or folding their marginal hands.
As a result, good no limit hold'em players will usually be masters of human psychology and bravery, able to consistently and accurately put their opponents to the test in the right spots. An adventurous and creative personality will aid a no limit hold'em player much more than it will a limit player because of this, as creating advanced and dangerous plays is much more important in no limit games.
Conversely, having a stable and consistent personality will aid the limit player much more, as creative thought takes a back seat to simply playing solid and consistent poker over the long run in limit.
Thinking about how your personality fits in with the games can really help avoid tilt and give you the maximum edge. Poker is often about knowing yourself as much (if not more) than your opponents, and picking games that both fit your style of play as well as having the minimum tilt effect on you when things go wrong can really help increase your profits.
