EPT Grand Final - Monte Carlo Updates
Welcome to Team Betfairs Updates at the EPT Grand Final sponsored by Pokerstars.com hosted in the Glamourous Monte Carlo. We will keep you updated on Team Betfair's Progress at this prestitgous event. Enjoy!
This is Marc Convey reporting on the all new Betfair blog. Thomas Kremser is our well known tournament director for this event and he has just got play for day 1a underway here in the beautiful card room located in the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel. Players start with 15,000 chips and will be playing seven levels today, each lasting ninty minutes.
We'll be keeping a close eye on Team Betfair's Annette, Sorel and Ben today as well as Stephen Pearce from the UK and brought in directly through Betfair. To keep them comapny today are players such as Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein, Patrik Antonius, Erik Lindgren, Marcel Luske, Isabelle Mercier, Roland DeWolfe and Greg Raymer. The latter two happen to be sitting right next to Ben and Sorel. A full list of today's players to follow.
The room the tournament is taking place in must be one of the most spectacular places on earth to play poker. When the tournament started the large panoramic window was covered by curtains. They have now been pulled back to reveal a view to die for, a view of the bay of Monte Carlo. It's a bit cloudy today but still manages the 'wow' factor. A very fitting setting to end season 4 of the EPT.
A hand that involved Annette in the first level saw her raise to 150 from under the gun. She got called by Barny Boatman and the big blind player. The flop came down...

Aces of a different kind
Boris Becker is the latest addition to Team Pokerstars. The cynical side of me thinks it might be a promotional drive rather than an appointment for his poker skills! He's not playing today but he can be located in the player's lounge taking on players in battleship heads-up encounters.
An interesting table draw today sees British players, Peter and Josh Gould, take on each other. It may well be the first time in EPT history that a father and son have faced each other. Josh, the son, managed to double-up early on holding Aces versus an opponent's Kings. The free seat was filled by Phil Ivey, which is sure to spice things up even further.
Better luck for Annette

Cooler
Roland DeWolfe's stack has just been knocked down to around 4,000. He and an opponent saw a flop containing a ten and an eight. All the chips went in the middle and Roland was pretty confident with his holding of pockets eights for a set, that was until he saw the pocket tens of his opponent for a higher set!
Sorel's day so far
Sorel Mizzi hasn't been able to get much going n the first two levels. Whenever he's raised he seems to find two or more callers and then gets raised off the pot post flop after he's tried a continuation bet. The one time he managed to find a big hand and turn the nuts his opponent folded. No specific hands worth reporting about so far.
Gloomy Grundy
The second level today wasn't a good one for Ben Grundy. He was already below 10,000 when he got into a pre-flop raising war with an opponent. Ben was holding pocket queens and saw his opponent call all-in with ace-seven! All was looking good for Ben until the river cruelly revealed an ace. The very last hand of the level he managed to triple-up though holding pocket eights versus two opponents both holding ace-queen. Still some work to do though for Ben before he feels secure.
Team Betfair chip counts at the end of level 2
Annette Obrestad - 11,500
Sorel Mizzi - 9,000
Ben Grundy - 6,600
Ben Out
The comeback didn't last long for Ben. He manged to get it all-in pre-flop holding king-queen. He was called by an opponent though holding ace-jack. No help for Ben on the board and he leaves us early on in the tournament. Better luck next time Ben.
Mizzing Flops
'It's been one of those days' Sorel tells me as he heads off for his dinner break. Any time he's raised with a mid-pair pre-flop he finds a re-raiser behind him forcing him to lay down. Any time raises and sees a flop he misses and if he tries a continuation bet he again has to lay it down to a raise. All these factors don't add up to an increasing stack, they add up to around 3,000 in Sorel's case. The following hand sums up his day...
There's an early position caller and also a call by Greg Raymer in the cut-off position before Sorel bumps it up to 925. The early position raiser calls but Greg gets out of the way. The flop comes down...

Ivey out
Phil Ivey's European adventure is over. He's in the small blind holding jack-three and the big blind's holding pocket fives. When the flop came down with a jack, five and three the chips were always going to go in. Phil shoved the rest of his stack in when the turn came down and found a quick caller to eliminate him.
One of our qualifiers
I finally managed to catch up with Betfair player Stephen Pearce after struggling to locate him. He's going along very well with a little over 20,000 but he was at the dizzy heights of 40,000 at one point until he gave some away to a player holding a higher set than him. Then he gave more away in a three way all-in encounter on a flop containing a queen, a jack and an eight. Stephen was holding pocket eights for a set, another player was holding ace-queen and the final player was holding pockets jacks for a bigger set that were good for the 45,000 pot. If Stephen had won that one he'd be our chip leader right now. We'll find out a little more about the latest member of Team Betfair a little later on.

The only way is up
Sorel's stack is now going in the right direction. Before the following hand he managed to get up to around 10,000.
There's an under-the-gun limper before a player in the cut-off raises it up to 800. Sorel is sitting in the small blind where he re-raises to 2,400. The original limper passes before the cut-off player goes all-in for around 7,000. Sorel insta-calls with..

Another level of poker
A very interesting hand just happened on the High Stakes Poker table. Neither Eli Elezra or Barry Greenstein were involved though. It was folded around to Luca Pagano on the button who called the 200 big blind before a player in the small blind raised it up to 800. Luca called and the flop came down...

This is where it gets interesting. The small blind checks this time to face a bet of 3,500 from Luca. After a slight pause he makes it 10,000 to go, leaving just over 6,000 back. Luca blows air through his lips and takes off his designer sunglasses as he assesses what's happening. He only has just under 15,000 so this decision is vital as there's little fold equity. 'All-in' escapes the lips of the Italian as he moves each stack of chips over the line. Due to the action and the amount of chips in the middle everyone around the table is expecting a quick call. It doesn't come though as the small blind players sits there in what looks like mental agony. It seems to kill him to do it but he folds sending the pot Luca's way.
'Show a black card' cries Eli.
'What? A black one like that?' replies Luca as he flips over the ace of clubs.
'Genius, pure genius' are the words of Thomas Fougeron in the next seat.
'Wow, just wow' adds Eli.
The downing of Annette
Sadly, Annette is no more. There was an under-the-gun limper that she failed to see, hence the small raise of the 200 big blind up to 500. The big blind and the initial raiser call before the flop comes...

Last Level for today
It was advertised on the EPT website that we would be playing six levels today but after all the extra entries Thomas Kremser decided to add an extra level. The player numbers are low enough now that he's decided to only play half of the last level.
One player not to make through those forty-five minutes is Isabelle Mercier. Nursing a short-stack for a long while she finally found a spot to get her remaining chips in and a willing customer holding pocket eights. She was in good shape with pocket jacks. The flop came and went with no problems for 'No Mercy' but the turn brought a nasty looking eight to end her Monte Carlo dreams after such a long day's play. She didn't look happy at all as she stormed out of the room.
Stephen Pearce didn't make through the day. The colourful player had his table entertained all day with his banter but after running into bigger made hands all day he is no more. We'll try to find details of his exit when we catch up with him.
Last five hands
With ten minutes left of today's play the tournament clock is stopped and each table is dealt five more hands. This helps to eliminate any advantage gained by slow playing. All the press were asked to leave the room at this point. Shortly before this happened I approached Sorel to see him deeply involved in a pot. We're at the turn stage and the board reads as follows...
4
q
9
a
Sorel is in position and bets 5,200 when it's checked to him. His opponent calls so we see the river...
8![]()
Once more Sorel fces a check and once more he bets, a total of 12,075 this time. His opponent then raises up to 25,000. This confuses Sorel and he sits there with a crowd gathering around as he ponders his decision. After a good few minutes he concludes he can't call and slowly slides his cards over the line. It's a big dent in his stack but he's still in and that prospect looked unlikely at one point today.
Final Words
Play has come to an end here in Monte Carlo. After around twelve long hours of play 172 players of the 292 remain and will come back the day after tomorrow to pick up where they left off. Tomorrow will be a carbon copy of today and it's sure to be packed full of big name players in search of more glory. Sorel Mizzi is the one remaining Team Betfair player and despite his late knock will be reading to take on tomorrow's remaining players when he returns on Monday. Play tomorrow will aim to get underway at 1200 GMT. I hope you can join us for more fun filled action.
This is Marc Convey signing off for tonight.
