Olympics Day 16 Preview: Your guide to all the golds to be handed out on the final day of the Games

Andrew Hughes has all the info for the last day of sport and ceremony in Beijing.

So after two weeks in which 10,000 athletes competed in 302 events at 37 venues, it's finally over. There will be no fat ladies singing in the Birds Nest Stadium (though there will be a fair scattering of stoutly-built ones) but the 24th Olympiad will conclude with a spectacular three hour closing ceremony.

Well, some of it will be spectacular. In addition to the Chinese-flavoured goings on, we are reliably informed that David Beckham will be entering the stadium atop a red London bus, from which he will proceed to kick a football. This is, apparently, intended to showcase our great British humour. I must be honest, I can't immediately spot the humour, unless the intention is for the former footballer to deliberately miss the ball in a Norman Wisdom style and plummet from the top of the bus. Now that would be funny.

There's a solitary athletics medal to be won today, as a large field of skinny men attempt the unenviable task of running 26 miles through the Beijing smog before receiving a deserving ovation at the end of a lap or two of the giant Bird's Nest Stadium. No prizes for guessing the nationality of the two men heading the market for the last athletics gold, with both Martin Lel and Sammy Wanjiru hailing from the distance running powerhouse of Kenya.

With only a handful of other sports still to settle outstanding medal issues, there's a bumper card of final bouts in the Workers Gymnasium. No less than six golds will be won today in the light-flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight, welterweight, light-heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions.

By way of contrast to all that burly bashing, the rhythmic gymnasts will demonstrate some less violent but no less demanding exertions with the graceful manoeuvres of the group all round final in which Russia are clear favourites for gold.

After having to go through the long-winded formalities of the preliminary and knock-out rounds, the Dream Team finally reach the day of their coronation with only Spain standing in the way of their golden moment. There surely can't be an upset here, can there?

Team USA have a far tougher task in the men's volleyball final where they take on [1.42] favourites Brazil who will be anxious to avenge their defeat at the hands of the Americans in the World League last month. Meanwhile, it's France against Iceland for handball gold and in the pool, there's one last bout of splashing with the final of the men's water polo event in which Hungary take on the USA.

And then, it will all be over for another four years. The mayor of Beijing will officially hand the flag over to the mayor of London. Who knows, Boris may even take this opportunity to address the millions of viewers worldwide and say a few words on behalf of the people of Britain. "Er....right.....forgotten my speech....well....oh yes, here's one you'll like....What time does a Chinaman go to the dentist...."
