The French Connection: Football league final day treble

The French Connection RSS / Andrew French / 01 May 2009 / Leave a comment

They need three points from their last game of the season and they are at home to opponents with nothing to play for. If Burnley don't secure a place in the Championship play-offs, they will have no-one to blame but themselves.

Having managed to juggle a promotion push with excellent runs in both cup competitions, you could argue that Burnley deserve at least a pop at the play-offs - but football doesn't work like that and if they slip up on Sunday, Preston will be there to pounce and leapfrog them.

Burnley showed plenty of grit to twice come from behind and earn a point at Southampton last weekend, and their recent 1-0 win at home against Sheffield United showed what a tough place Turf Moor is for visitors.

Bristol City were in the play-off frame themselves, but they have fallen away and come into this game on the back of a run of seven games without a win.

Burnley have to win
to be certain - so back them at [1.48].

Having been beaten by MK Dons in midweek, Northampton have to now take a point from their last game of the season to be certain of staying in League One. Unfortunately for them, that game is at Elland Road against Leeds.

It's unlikely that Cobblers manager Stuart Gray will anticipate trying to match Leeds' passing game, and so is probably going to try to park the bus across his goal and hope to grind out the point that keeps his side's safety in their own hands.

That could well play into Leeds' hands though, who need to win the game in order to try and secure a home second leg in the play-offs.

Therefore, back Leeds as the second leg of your treble at [1.86].

In League Two, with a play-off place secured come what may, Bury have third-placed Exeter in their sights on the final day, hoping to clamber over the Grecians into one of the automatic promotion places.

They must take three points at Gigg Lane to have any chance of doing so, but they couldn't have asked for much more beatable opposition than mid-table Accrington Stanley - they have nothing to play for, and with the worst away scoring record in the entire division, there is little to scare Bury.

Alan Knill's side have won their last three home games, and I am confident they will do all they can to secure automatic promotion by making it four out of four. Back Bury to win at [1.33].
