Monte's Multiple: A blend of youth and experience to bring home the bacon

Monte's Multiple RSS / Jaymes Monte / 27 October 2009 / Leave a comment

Stephen Hendry has been continuously underestimated in the Premier League this year, and this week is no exception.

Jaymes Monte believes that experience can come out on top in the Premier League of snooker, but youthful exuberance will shine through in north London...

Lay Murphy to beat Hendry @ 1.8
Back Arsenal to beat Liverpool @ 2.2
Back India to beat Australia @ 1.8 (2nd ODI)

Treble pays @ 8.7

Bet 1 - Snooker, Premier League

I misread the Shaun Murphy and Marco Fu game last week, and it cost us a winning treble. Murphy improved dramatically from his recent woes and fully deserved the win, but Fu was terrible. He missed a string of straight forward pots and regularly failed to put Murphy under any pressure with his safety play.

Despite Murphy's resurgence against Fu I am going to have to take him on again this week at a price that I just cannot justify. As I have mentioned, Murphy was rarely under any pressure last week and he did leave Fu in amongst the balls on more than one occasion only for the advantage to be handed straight back.

He is up against Stephen Hendry who has been continually under estimated in the Premier League this year, regularly being priced up at [4.5] or bigger, yet he has only lost one of his four fixtures to date. It is no secret that the Scot is nowhere near the level he was ten years ago, but his snooker brain is still fully functional and when in amongst the balls he is as lethal as any of the top players.

Selection: Lay Murphy to beat Hendry @ [1.8]

Bet 2 - Football, Carling Cup

The League Cup has developed a 'Mickey Mouse' reputation in recent years, due to the strength of team that some managers field in the competition. However, that reputation is slowly changing as the clubs out with the restraints of a European campaign see this as a prime opportunity to win some silverware. And with more and more Premier League clubs building stronger and deeper squads, there is rarely a game involving a top flight side where 90% of the players aren't household names.

However, the teams competing in the Champions League do still see this as an opportunity to blood their youngsters and rest their star players. Nowhere more so than in the red half of north London where year after year Arsene Wenger has dazzled us with the flair and flamboyance of his youngsters. Carlos Vela, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have all made their names in this competition in recent years and don't be surprised to see other names join that list throughout this years League Cup campaign.

With Rafael Benitez under increasing scrutiny and his squad becoming increasingly strained, you can be sure that he will not be risking any of his star players on Wednesday night. That means that it will certainly be a clash of two second string sides at the Emirates.

If you cast your mind back to the 2006/07 league cup you may recall that these two sides clashed under similar circumstances, with the Arsenal youngsters emerging as 6-3 victors in a thrilling encounter at Anfield. Although it would be far fetched to suggest that they can produce a similar result this week, I still believe that they have a considerable advantage when playing their second string of players.

Selection: Back Arsenal to beat Liverpool @ [2.2]

Bet 3 - Cricket, India v Australia, 2nd ODI

Australia began this seven match series with a victory that ended up being a lot less comfortable than it should have been. A stunning innings from Harbhajan Singh put India within touching distance of their target total going into the last over.

Having recovered from 201-7 off 39.5, they needed just nine runs from the 50th over to make 293 and produce a memorable victory. But Harbhajan fell to Peter Siddle on the second ball of the over and the rest, as they say, is history.

Naturally, Australia opened up as the odds on favourites for the second ODI, but injuries to key players have caused a flip-flop in prices before a ball has been bowled. Both Brett Lee and James Hopes have been ruled out of the second ODI and there are doubts over the fitness of both Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Hauritz.

India, on the other hand, have injury news of a positive nature as Yuvraj Singh is expected to return to the side. On his day, Yuvraj is one of the most destructive batsmen in limited overs cricket, and on home soil he tends to have more on days than off days.

Injuries both positive and negative are the reason that the pre-match prices have flip-flopped, and are also the reason that I will be advising you to put our hard earned on the hosts.
