Bart Cummings will rely on German import Illo and second string Precedence as he attempts to win his 14th Australian Cup at Flemington on Saturday...

The pair were put through their paces at Flemington earlier this week and, unsurprisingly, it was Illo, rated the superior of the duo by Timeform, who impressed work watchers most.

Cummings has booked Kerrin McEvoy to take the ride on Illo, who warmed up for Saturday's feature with a fourth place finish behind Black Caviar over an inadequate 1400m in the C. F. Orr Stakes before a second to Lucas Cranach in the Peter Young Stakes (1800m), both at Caulfield.

Michael Rodd will be on board Precedence, who trailed home in the former race when last seen.

Last-start Sandown Classic winner Americain, winner of the Melbourne Cup in 2010 for Alain de Royer-Dupre and fourth in the 2011 renewal, makes his debut for David Hayes and currently trades as favourite, just shading another German import Lucas Cranach, who has done well in Australia since finishing fifth behind subsequent Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream in his homeland.

Manighar, formerly trained by Luca Cumani and now with Peter Moody, also features towards the head of the market.
