Nick Shiambouros preview the opening races at the Breeders' Cup

I have been like a kid waiting for Christmas all week and the moment has finally arrived as The Breeders Cup World Championship finally gets underway.

I hope regular readers have enjoyed the build-up to this great event and I am going to preview every race over the two days. I have seen a lot of the horses in the flesh and I have been back to America periodically to see some of the many trials and a few of the older horses compete throughout the year.

The Breeders' Cup Filly And Mare Sprint
Back in August I reported that Dream Rush should be a deserved favourite for this event after bolting up in The Test Stakes at the Spa. I do not see any real reason to change my mind but La Traviata must be seen as a real threat and Miss Macy Sue could run to a place. Dream Rush has definite tactical speed so if they go away too fast early on, she can sit just off the leaders and pick them up. I will be backing Dream Rush in the win at around 3.7 and a saver on Miss Macy Sue.

The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

In truth this is by far the weakest contest over the two days. It really must be mentioned that all the Breeders' Cup races on the Friday are not Graded Stakes races. This particular race has really been created with the Europeans in mind as there are only a handful of turf races of this nature in America. I think Gio Ponti sets a fair standard so it's win and place for small stakes for me.

The Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile
Now this race does interest me a great deal as it features the hugely overrated Discreet Cat. Regular readers will already have shown a healthy profit laying this son of Forestry as previously advised when he was outclassed in The Vosburgh in September. I was at Aqueduct last November when he won The Cigar Mile in good style. I suppose when you cover the first six furlongs in 1.07 and change it appears that this is the performance of a wonder horse but in truth the track was running very fast all day at the big A and a lot of the races were very quick. At the end of the day Discreet Cat has only beaten two horses of merit in his entire career - an over the top Silver Train in the Cigar Mile and a sick Invasor in Dubai. On Friday he faces some solid opposition in Met Mile winner Corinthian who - if returning to his very best - would simply outclass Discreet Cat and High Finance who could make all if allowed to get loose on the lead. I suppose by now you would have figured out that I am laying Discreet Cat at around 2.7 for the win.
