The Timeform Statistical Review for the 2008 Flat season incorporates our yearly bloodstock review and analysis of the top trainers in Britain and Ireland. This extract focuses on trainer Saeed bin Suroor and sire Invincible Spirit whose progeny won over £750,000 on the racetrack in Britain in 2008.
~ Usual slow start to the year, with just 12 wins by the end of June, but typically came good in the autumn, recording 17 wins in October, though still failed to show a level-stake profit that month.
~ Juveniles typically sharper for an outing, as were 3-y-os, both age groups having much better strike rate second time out than on debut.
~ Maintained good record on all-weather track at Lingfield, but also worth noting that Southwell and Great Leighs have been targeted with success.
Course Watch: Newbury
Horse to Follow: Covert Ambition 3 ch.c (Timeform Rating 105p) Well-bred colt who made his debut in October (in a Nottingham maiden), and looked smart prospect in scoring by seven lengths, his cause looking hopeless four furlongs out but overwhelming the opposition in no time once things started to click. A big, strong individual, he looks set to make a name for himself in 2009.
Stallion: Invincible Spirit
~ Quickly established himself as a leading sire of sprinters, fee was €75,000 in 2008 after starting at €9,000, though it has been reduced to €60,000 for 2009.
~ Progressed well himself as a racehorse, and progeny seem to be doing likewise with median ratings of 74 for his juveniles and 78 for older horses.
~ Prize money increased massively, even when Kingship Spirit's sales-race victory is discounted.
~ Best runners in 2008 were the impressive Temple Stakes winner Fleeting Spirit and the resurgent former Gimcrack winner Conquest, victorious in the Stewards Cup and a Group 3 at Ascot.
~ A decent season for the juveniles with fifteen winners, six of them useful.
~ Largely a sire of sprinters, though some stay further like 2007 Prix du Jockey Club winner Lawman and smart handicapper Allied Powers.
