Timeform reflect on the E.B.F. Traditional Pasty & Pie Company Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Newmarket last Friday...
The mile maiden run for juvenile fillies at Newmarket last Friday contained a spread of debutants and more experienced two-year-olds and although the twice-raced Golden Aria took the prize, a number of those making their first racecourse appearance produced highly promising displays, with a couple looking potential listed/Pattern performers in the making.
Arguably most promising was the Henry Cecil-trained Timepiece who finished strongly to take second (half-a-length behind Golden Aria), having shown signs of inexperience. From a very successful middle family, which Cecil has had considerable success with (trained half-sister, Passage Of Time, and half-brother, Father Time), Timepiece was well backed and looked a useful prospect, with the best of her likely to be seen when upped in trip. However, a maiden win would appear a formality and wouldn't be surprise if she appeared in a listed/Pattern event before the end of the season.
The John Gosden-trained Gertrude Bell also looked a useful prospect in third, having not experienced the clearest of passages before finished strongly, finishing around half-a-length behind the winner. The daughter of Sinndar looks sure to improve, while she is likely to thrive when stepped up to middle distances.
Woodford Belle finished back in fourth for Brian Meehan and looked more in need of the experience than most of the debutants. However, the daughter of Arch seemed to be learning her job as the race unfolded and was able to keep on to finish three-and-a-quarter lengths behind the winner. There looks likely to be improvement to come next time and she should definitely be up to winning a maiden of a similar standard.
Little Oz was unconsidered in the market at 100/1, but produced a promising display to finish sixth, five lengths behind Golden Aria. The daughter of Red Ransom looked even better than the bare form after being hampered, while she was also given a considerate ride. That should prove a positive for the future and there looks likely to be improvement to come, with a mile-and-a-quarter likely to be within her reach.
