Timeform take a close look at three horses form whom success may be on the horizon...
There was plenty of buzz surrounding the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained juvenile Coordinated Cut before the son of Montjeu made a debut in a mile maiden at Doncaster last Thursday, having been cut to Derby favourite with some bookmakers before the race. After running green early on, Coordinated Cut showed a smart change of gear to readily land the prize, before idling when in control. There promises to be significant improvement left in the locker and we are likely to see the best of the rangy colt when he is stepped up to middle distances next season, though the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy has been mooted as a possible next outing.
Mawatheeq only started his career in August 2008 as a three-year-old, but had looked a potential Pattern performer after impressively landing a mile handicap at Ascot in September by six lengths from Dunn'o. The son of Danzig overcame a 145-day absence and showed smart form to beat Eastern Aria in a mile-and-a-quarter Class 2 handicap at Doncaster on Thursday, showing an impressive change of gear. With the Marcus Tregoning stable now in flying form, Mawatheeq looks likely to challenging at a higher level in the near future, with the Cambridgeshire a possible target, while Pattern races wouldn't look out of the question after this success.
The Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh has a rich tradition of unearthing some of the top European juveniles, while many of its past winners have gone on to achieve significant success in there three-year-old campaigns. The likes of George Washington, Teofilo, New Approach and Mastercraftsman have won the seven furlong race in the past five years and this years renewal was won by the Kevin Prendergast-trained Kingsfort. Having impressively landed a strong course and distance event in June the son of War Chant was targeted at this race, and showed a willing attitude to narrowly hold on from the promising Chabal, having travelled strongly. Now favourite in some books for the 2000 Guineas, Kingsfort is likely to be put away for the season and looks an exciting prospect for next year, with there still looking to be improvement to come.
