Wayne Bailey shows you how to pick a potential winner on its first time out
Bookie shops are interesting places.
I'd reckon that fantasy writer J.R.R. Tolkien would have loved them. When stuck for an idea, he could have popped down to his local bookies to listen to the punters. There are more myths and legends found in bookie shops than in all of Tolkien's books combined!
"Always back a horse with first time blinkers"...."Always back the second favourite"...."Never back the top weight"...."Only back Tony McCoy"..."Only back Frankie"
The list is endless.
Of course, none of the above are profitable strategies, but every bookie shop has a guy that follows such 'systems'.
I don't want to paint every bookie shop punter with the one brush, but if you've been to a bookies in the past twenty years, you'll know what I'm talking about. 'Joe Punter' is terribly conservative when it comes to picking horses, and is afraid to step outside his comfort zone, even if that zone is a losing one in the long term. He will blame everybody but himself when his selections lose but will always return to the bookies the next day to watch the 'free' racing coverage on plasma screens while sipping his 'free' coffee, not realising that he is paying for his comfortable surroundings.
If you're reading this, you've probably taken the step away from the bookie shops, and moved towards the exchanges. This is, no doubt, a positive move, and hopefully your betting won't be influenced by the myths that keep the bookies in business.
One such myth is that you should always ignore horses that are having their debut race.
It's a pity that the Discovery Channel programme 'Mythbusters' never investigated this angle, as it appears there is actually plenty of money to be made in debutants, provided you note the trainer. Some trainers prepare their horses extremely well before letting it run and regularly find themselves in the winners enclosure, while other trainers are happy to let the horse have a few runs before deciding what races it should specialise in. This is where we step in and exploit any backing or laying opportunities that arise in such races.
I decided to analyse the fate of debut horses (2000-2007) and make a note of any significant trainer trends:
Trainer: N J Henderson
Horse: Debut
Bet type: Back
Races: All national hunt races with less than 20 runners
Bets: 225
Wins: 77
Strike rate: 34.2 percent

Bet type: Back
Races: All flat turf races
Bets: 124

Strike rate: 36.3 percent
Backer's profit to SP using £100 stakes: £4,846
Trainer: Ferdy Murphy
Horse: Debut
Bet type: Lay
Races: All national hunt races, male horses only
Bets: 128

Strike rate: 7 percent
Layer's profit to SP using £100 stakes: £4182
Trainer: WGM Turner
Horse: Debut
Bet type: Lay
Races: All-weather races
Bets: 55
Wins: 2
Strike rate: 3.6 percent
Layer's profit to SP using £100 stakes: £1112
Trainer: TD Easterby
Horse: Debut
Bet type: Lay
Races: All flat turf
Bets: 474
Wins: 15
Strike rate: 3.2 percent
Layer's profit to SP using £100 stakes: £11,012
Trainer: E.A.L. Dunlop
Horse: Debut
Bet type: Lay
Races: All flat turf
Bets: 249
Wins: 5
Strike rate: 2 percent
Layer's profit to SP using £100 stakes: £14,263
Sometimes it's difficult to step into the unknown, and back or lay a horse with no previous form. However, thinking outside the box is what gives successful punters their edge. Backing or laying debutant horses under certain conditions can reap rewards, and we have the statistics to back this fact up - statistics that you probably won't hear about in your local bookies!

Wayne
I have started to look back at your previous works which are excellent. two I particularly like were the article here and the article on horses returning after a three month break.Do you have a full list of how trainers get on with debut horses? If so would I be able see it? If not I would imagine that it would be comparable with the list of how trainers get on with horses who have been absent from the track. I am in this predicement after I read in a racecard 'Donald McCain Jnr.'s newcomers deserve the utmost respect anywhere', I then read in a book that he had only a 7pc strike rate. So I am fairly confused.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Alan De Feypo
