Pepe Simo: Blotted his copybook on his chasing debut at Fontwell but jumped much better when winning at Sandown, and he has continued the improvement in that area at home since. We have kept him ticking over and he beat Noland in a Jumpers' Bumper on the all-weather here last month. He has some decent rivals in opposition on Saturday, notably Warwick winner Nadiya De La Vega who gets the mares' allowance, but the flat track should suit him really well. If it rains heavily and the ground turns really testing, he may not run though. Has the Lightning Novice Chase at Doncaster on January 29 as an alternative if that is the case, but he could even take in both races.

The Reformer: We won this race with The Minack last year and The Reformer is a horse I like a lot. Finished second in a bumper here last April and finished second on his hurdling debut at Wincanton before going one better at Exeter last time, and the second there won next time. Continues to improve at home and I think the step up in trip will be ideal, as will the ground. This is a much better race - Nicky's Chablais was bought for 260,000gns after winning his point - but he should give a good account of himself.

Escort'Men: Has plenty to do at the weights here - for example, Timeform rate him 18lb inferior to Binocular - but I have a feeling this race could play to his strengths. Don't get me wrong, he wouldn't have too much chance in the Champion Hurdle but this isn't Cheltenham in March. He won the Dovecote by 14 lengths over course and distance on soft ground last February and amazed me when winning off a mark of 146 on his reappearance at Chepstow, as I didn't think he was ready. With Overturn likely to make this a good test, the race could be run to suit and I've a feeling that he could run better than the ratings suggests he should.

Organisateur: Won well at Taunton two starts ago but was raised 14lb for that, and he went up another 7lb after finishing a short head second to Dynaste last time. That makes life very hard indeed for him in handicaps, although regular jockey Ian Popham at least takes 5lb off. The flat track, trip and going will all suit him, too. But I come back to his handicap mark of 154, and giving upwards of 6lb away all round here will prove very difficult indeed. It could be that the Cleeve Hurdle or the National Spirit at Fontwell could be on the cards after this.

Like Minded: We bought him after he won a point to point and a bumper for Don Cantillon. He finished fourth in an Aintree bumper for us before winning a novice hurdle over course and distance. He got a leg after finishing second to Manyriverstocross in a listed race at Sandown, so he hasn't raced since December 2009. But he is in good form coming into this, Ryan takes 5lb off, and he returns on a fair mark. I think he has a definite each way chance in what is clearly a competitive race. This will be his last run over hurdles before he goes chasing.

Carlicue: Point-to-point winner who ran well on his hurdling debut to finish second to Alverstone at Chepstow, albeit being beaten 14 lengths. Would have learned from that, trip and ground will be ideal for this big strong sort - a chaser in the making - and he ought to go close. Works with Minella Stars, who won earlier in the week.

14:40, Ffos Las, Sunday
R De Rien Sivola: Was chasing in 2009, when winning over 2m4f at Uttoxeter, but has had a long time off with a leg injury and will need and improve for the run.
