Nicholls will be looking ahead to Aintree with his yard in better form.
"This was Opening Batsman’s second consecutive victory and he is a potentially useful performer for next season..."
Just three runners for Paul Nicholls this weekend but confidence is high heading into the Aintree Festival as the team managed to saddle two winners...
Opening Batsman got things underway with a victory for the team at Newton Abbot on Saturday afternoon, racing in a two mile and three furlong novices' hurdle. This was Opening Batsman's second consecutive victory and he is a potentially useful performer for next season. He wasn't ideally suited by the slightly shorter trip than what he faced on his penultimate start, but he demonstrated a thoroughly likeable attitude to defeat Hindon Road by a length. Opening Batsman is almost certain to improve when his stamina is further drawn out, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him back in the winners' enclosure soon having only had three starts over hurdles so far.
Doesslessthanme completed the Newton Abbot double for Nicholls later on the card, getting up by a short head to defeat Passato in a two mile handicap chase. Doesslessthanme travelled with notable fluency on Saturday and, despite the odd mistake, put in a well-rounded performance to secure his second handicap victory in a row. His style of racing and the fact he only just does enough may allow him some leverage over the handicapper in future, but he will remain vulnerable to less exposed sorts when upped in grade.
Pasco was unable to complete the Nicholls clean sweep on Saturday, he and Ruby Walsh unable to finish any better than sixth in a two and a half mile handicap chase at Haydock. The adoption of front-running tactics brought about little improvement in terms of bare form and, for all Pasco did jump well from the front, he found less than expected in customary fashion once he had been headed. The handicapper is relenting, but his attitude is likely to hold him back in future with everything needing to fall into his lap if he is going to win one of these contests.
