Nicholls' Weekend Runners: The Timeform Review

View market

There were only a handful of runners for Nicholls this weekend but two were successful and the team look to be heading to Aintree in relatively good form...

Balding Banker got things underway for the stables on Saturday, justifying his position towards the head of the market in a two-mile-five-furlong maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter under Ruby Walsh. The application of a first-time tongue tie seemed to make a difference to Balding Banker, who managed to put a couple of disappointing displays behind him, but he was far from certain to hold off the favourite when that one came down at the last, and the Nicholls runner probably isn't one to get over excited about in the future.

Tonic Mellysse was the other only other Nicholls representative at the midlands track but he was unable to complete the double in a two-mile beginners' chase, unseating Ruby Walsh at the third when settled towards the rear. Tonic Melysse has endured a frustrating season over fences and his jumping will need to improve if he is going to make an impact over fences.

The final race of the afternoon on Stratford's card saw Messrs Nicholls and Walsh complete a Saturday afternoon double as Whisky Yankee landed the bumper over two miles and a furlong. Whisky Yankee did well to win over the trip, his pedigree and style alike suggesting he is one to thrive over longer distances, and he looks to be a horse of good potential. Whisky Yankee travelled well for much of the race but the way he responded to Walsh's urgings inside the closing stages was even more impressive and he is likely to be winning good novice hurdles next season.

Ascot was the venue for the only two Nicholls runners on Sunday with Promising Anshan getting things started in a three-mile handicap hurdle. Promising Anshan ran with much credit and stayed on well to finish third after receiving what was probably an overly-patient ride from conditional Harry Derham, the pair conceding first run on the eventual winner and runner-up. Promising Anshan's absence since December means he will be fresher than most at this time of year and he can now reportedly heads for the Sandown Gold Cup on April 28.

Hoo La Baloo was disappointing in the closing hunter chase as he was sent off a relatively warm favourite only to put in an uncharacteristically tame display in finishing fifth of sixs runners. He has reportedly been retired.

"Whilst Hoo La Baloo's Sunday effort was unsatisfactory, it is worth noting that such blips have been a rare occurrence in his long career..."
