Nicholls' Weekend Runners: The Timeform Review

View market

After a busy week at Cheltenham, Paul Nicholls had only two runners this weekend but still managed to find himself in the Winners' Enclosure at Newton Abbot on Sunday...

Round Tom was Nicholls' solitary runner on Saturday afternoon and he finished a distant third behind Nicky Henderson's Problema Tic in a three mile handicap chase at Kempton. It is fair to say that Round Tom was well below his best on Saturday, neither travelling or jumping with fluency, and he was left well behind by the front two from four out, having made a blunder at the seventh fence and came under pressure thereafter. This was Round Tom's first run since October, however, so he may well have needed the outing.

Mr Hudson produced a win for team Ditcheat on Sunday, running out victorious in a three mile and two furlongs novices' chase at Newton Abbot. This was just his second start over fences, and Mr Hudson looks as though he could develop into a potentially useful novice, landing Sunday's contest by an impressive twelve lengths. Whilst Golden Chieftain was, no doubt disappointing, back in third, Mr Hudson definitely took a step in the right direction with the step up in trip proving to his liking, and it would be little surprise if he were to prove competitive in similar contests in the near future.
