Paul Nicholls: Hard week at Ditcheat as we lose Meanus

A serious injury and catastrophic breakdown sees the stable and owners lose Meanus Dandy

This sport has a habit of bringing you back down to earth very quickly, and I have sad news to relate that Meanus Dandy had to be put down this week.

He gave his owners, the Woodhouses, some great moments, not least when winning the Badger Ales at Wincanton two seasons ago and when finishing a close second to The Minack in the same race this year.

The horse sustained a serious injury to his near fore tendon when pulled up at Sandown last month.

He went back to his owners and received the best care and treatment possible.

But it proved to be a catastrophic breakdown, and unfortunately we lost him this week.

We celebrate the highs in this game, but we shouldn't shy away from revealing the lows, however painful they are.

On a related point, I would just like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everybody that got in touch - personally, as well as via Twitter and Facebook - after we gave you a detailed Master Minded update last week.

We had further good news today in that is he now out of his plaster, is progressing well and is at the next stage of his recovery.

I will keep you updated on his progress here.
