Tyner's passing puts everything into perspective

The tragic death of young jockey Jack Tyner underlines the bravery the role demands and reminds us all of the important things in life

Racing suffered another tragedy this week when Jack Tyner, just 19, died on Monday after undergoing surgery after a fall in a point to point.

It is hard to know what to say in these tragic circumstances - or whether it is best to say anything at all - but I would just like to offer my sincerest condolences to all his family and friends.

I can't imagine how his parents must be feeling.

My daughter Megan is 14, and my nephew Harry 16, and if something happened to either of that pair, I would be inconsolable.

And I look around my yard now and see all the young lads, and my heart would break if anything happened to them.

But not one of these lads would change a thing.

They know the risks, and accept them as part of doing something that they love. Such bravery in those so young makes me proud to be associated with them.

I have lost close friends in my time in the sport and tragedies like this put everything into context, and we are all guilty of losing perspective far too easily.

There is always another day for a beaten horse to win a race, and another time for a lesson to be learned and a mistake rectified.

But none when a jockey tragically lays down his life for others' enjoyment, as well as his own.

So the next time we are moved to criticise a jockey in a race, count to ten and think about Jack.

And don't forget.

Dear Paul, I was glad to see and agree with your comments, too many of us take these jockey's for granted never giving a thought to the every day risks they endure, my sympathy goes out to his parents, and i hope and i am sure they are very very proud of there son, and i wish them to get release from the knowledge that he acheived so much in a very short time.
My condolences from a father and i sure my views would be shared with millions of parents.
