Ascot Result: Master Minded scrapes home in VC Chase

View market

The Paul Nicholls-trained favourite, Master Minded, who was bidding for a repeat success in the Victor Chandler Chase after a 16-length win back in 2009, had just a short-head to spare this time around over the rallying Somersby.

Although Master Minded was going comfortably under Tony McCoy when he jumped to the front four out, he was made to work hard in the end by the determined Henrietta Knight-trained runner-up, who kept coming back at the dual Champion chaser.

Master Minded, who had looked back to his best in winning his previous two starts this season, was earning a seventh Grade 1 success and, in the process, took his prize-money record through the £1 million barrier.

On the back of such a narrow success, Master Minded has drifted slightly in the ante-post market for the Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, now available to back at [3.7]. Somersby, on the other hand, has come into [16.0], but there is still a good chance that he will wait for the Ryanair over half a mile further the following day.

ok master minded didnt win that far and i still have in the back of my mind his last years problems but i still fear him for cheltenham might be the stables form is bad at the moment i have liked big zeb all year but the funny thing is i am more afraid of masterminded now as i dont really think he should have won as he had such a off day but still did and i think mccoy rode him bad in my opinion just like he rode kauto the same bring back ruby or even noel for me

best jockey at this present time in my opinion is barry geraghty-he's improved so much since riding for henderson-practice makes perfect, and he certainly gets enough rides in top races to improve himself -bet paul nicholls,or david pipe wished they had him.

i agree that barry geraghty is a good jockey and always has been so is mccoy but think mccoy is better on the low grade type of horses where u need to grind out a win not on the classy ones think ruby is best on them i also notice some horses after mccoy rides them to win sometimes run terrible next time where he has been a little to hard on them perhaps its a shame timmy murphy isnt getting so much classy horses like he used to as he and quite a few other jokeys seem to not get the credit they deserve

agree with your comment, you need a jockey with a tactical brain, that has the horse in the right place and does not give it too much to do.Timmy murphy tends to over do the waiting tactics, maybe thats why some trainers would rather use the other 3 you mentioned (me also !).

I dont think paul will be to disapointed with master minded. in fact he may have run on his mark. paul has a strong entry 4 the queen mother and you may be shocked if the master is beaten. but it is a big possibility with pauls outher runner. who is a real class act. Big zeb the danger.
