Pacemaker for Kauto?

Royal Auclair, who made the frame in both the Gold Cup and the Grand National in 2005, could be used as a pacemaker for stablemate Kauto Star in Newbury's Aon Chase on Saturday.
Trainer Paul Nicholls will be hoping that the Newbury race does not become a tactical farce, a distinct possibility when only seven horses, including the champion trainer's trio of Kauto Star, Royal Auclair and Denman, were originally declared on Monday
A false race looks less likely now that five more runners - Tamarinbleu, Tango Royal, Sleeping Night, Fundamentalist and King Harald - were added to the entries of the reopened race on Tuesday.
Nicholls may still run three in the race and it would come as no surprise if the veteran Royal Auclair, who is in the same ownership as Kauto Star, ensures there is no dawdling.
The Newbury race is Kauto Star's final prep for the Gold Cup. He is currently the favourite at 2.6 in the Betfair ante-post list. French raider L'Ami is his nearest Aon Chase rival in the Gold Cup betting at 120.
