Ian Dean started in horse racing 20 years ago when joining the Timeform Organisation straight from university. A decade at their Halifax base included three years tipping for the Timeform Phone Service and a spell as deputy editor on the Chasers and Hurdlers Annual.

The lure of the city resulted in a change of direction, when Ian became manager of Sportspages Specialist Sports Bookshop in the centre of Manchester. However, he was drawn back to horseracing in 2006 when offered a position as one of The Sportsman newspaper’s tipping team, The Four Horsemen.

Sadly, The Sportsman folded after six months, but not before Ian had recorded a healthy profit with his selections, in part thanks to the 50/1 Royal Ascot success of Les Arcs.

He is currently a freelance racing journalist and odds compiler.
